Michael Floyd Agent Attributes Failed Alcohol Sobriety Test to Kombucha

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Michael Floyd could be ordered to serve jail time after reportedly testing positive for alcohol during house arrest. However, he denied the allegations.

On Friday, TMZ Sports reported Floyd’s alcohol-monitoring system flagged five separate events between June 11 and June 12. Further testing reportedly showed his blood alcohol concentration at between .044 and .055, which he said was due to drinking kombucha, a low-alcohol tea.

Brian Murphy of the St. Paul Pioneer Press passed along the wideout’s response: “Totally false. The whole thing is false. You can’t believe everything TMZ says.”

Tom Pelissero of USA Today provided a statement from Floyd’s agent:

The Vikings also released a statement Friday: “We are aware of the situation involving Michael Floyd and are looking into the matter. We are still gathering facts and will withhold any further comment at this time.”

Fox 10 Arizona reported the 27-year-old Minnesota native was sentenced to 24 days in jail and 96 days of house arrest after pleading guilty to extreme DUI in February. The case related to a December arrest when police found him passed out in his car with a blood-alcohol level of .217, more than twice the legal limit.

One of the rules for his house arrest forced Floyd to completely avoid alcohol during the time he spent under house arrest. While he successfully petitioned a judge to remove his ankle bracelet for football reasons, he failed random breath tests that were substituted in, according to TMZ Sports.

The report noted the former member of the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots is due in court June 26, when he could be sent back to jail if it’s determined he violated house-arrest rules.

Floyd signed a one-year contract with the Vikings in May. He told the team’s official website at the time he “learned from this experience.”

“I am very excited to come home and play for the Minnesota Vikings. I have been training extremely hard this offseason in addition to taking responsibility and paying the consequences for my mistake,” he said. “Although I cannot change my past decisions, I have definitely learned from this experience and look forward to making valuable contributions to the Vikings organization and the Minnesota community, both as a player and a person. Time to go to work.”

Spotrac noted the Vikings can release Floyd without leaving any dead cap space.

He’s been expected to compete with Jarius Wright and Laquon Treadwell during training camp for the role as Minnesota’s No. 3 receiver behind Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen.
