Paige VanZant Shows Impact of Weight-Cutting in Photos

Weight-cutting is a serious problem in mixed martial arts, but at least for Paige VanZant, that appears to be a thing of the past with the creation of the new 125-pound weight class.

The UFC fighter posted a pair of pictures Wednesday showing her attempt to cut down to 115 pounds, including one of her on the bathroom floor:

She previously competed in the strawweight division but now intends to fight in the flyweight division at 125. The next highest class used to be bantamweight at 135 pounds.

UFC President Dana White announced the decision to add the fourth women’s weight class in May because of the sport’s growth.

VanZant had posted a 7-3 record in her MMA career, with her last event being a December loss to Michelle Waterson at the 115-pound class.

The 23-year-old fighter discussed the challenges of cutting down from as heavy as 137 pounds to make weight for her bouts.

“It’s a big cut for me,” VanZant told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour in September (h/t Marc Raimondi of MMA Fighting). “I’m a lot heavier than people realize. I was honestly killing myself for this sport. In my last I want to say two fights or three fights, I’ve passed out in my bathroom. This last one, I passed out and had the doctors almost not cleared me for the fight.”

Although VanZant was forced to pull out of UFC 216 because of what turned out to be a variety of ailments, she appears happy to make the transition to a bigger weight class.

Jaguars Owner Shad Khan Says Donald Trump ‘Jealous’ of NFL

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan, who once donated $1 million to Donald Trump’s inauguration, is once again lashing out at the sitting president.

Khan categorized Trump as “jealous” of the NFL and chastised his societal views in an interview with Jarrett Bell of USA Today.

“Let’s get real,” Khan said. “The attacks on Muslims, the attacks on minorities, the attacks on Jews. I think the NFL doesn’t even come close to that on the level of being offensive. Here, it’s about money, or messing with—trying to soil a league or a brand that he’s jealous of.”

Trump was once famously the face of the failed USFL and has tried on multiple occasions to own an NFL franchise. Khan pointed to Trump’s failings to purchase an NFL team as a potential reason for his criticism.

“He’s been elected President, where maybe a great goal he had in life to own an NFL team is not very likely,” Khan said. “So to make it tougher, or to hurt the league, it’s very calculated.”

Trump, who has made protests during the national anthem one of his major public points of contention, took to Twitter on Wednesday to criticize the NFL for not banning players from kneeling during the anthem.

“Too much talk, not enough action. Stand for the National Anthem,” Trump wrote in a tweet directed to the NFL.

Khan said he contributed $1 million to Trump’s inauguration because he was interested in some economic policies he touted on the campaign trail. While he does not “regret” that decision, he repeated his stance that Trump is a “divider, not a uniter.”

Khan, who is from Pakistan, pointed specifically to Trump’s continued attempts to institute travel bans for people from a group of Muslim-majority countries.

“That’s one aspect that you can imagine—someone is getting a visa that will change their life is from a Muslim-majority country—and, now, boom, that dream to change lives, they get locked out,” Khan said. “That’s a hell of a lot more significant than fighting some sponsors or people who want their money back because they’ve been riled up.”

NFL Rookies Torching Record Books Through First 6 Weeks

The 2017 class of rookie skill-position players have taken the NFL by storm. Through six weeks of the campaign, no other group of first-year players—excluding the 1987 season that featured replacements in the first three games—has totaled more scrimmage yards or touchdowns in league history, per NFL Communications.

Through six weeks of action, rookies have totaled 8,352 scrimmage yards, outpacing the previous mark of 7,693 set in 2014 by a significant margin. The touchdowns record was previously held by the 1983 rookie class (57), but the 2017 players have totaled 59 thus far.

In terms of yards from scrimmage, Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt not only leads rookies, but he also leads the league in the category with 885, per Pro Football Reference. Jacksonville Jaguars tailback Leonard Fournette (732) ranks second among rookies, with Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook—who suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Week 4—amassing 444 yards to still rank third in the class.

The first non-running back on the list is New York Giants tight end Evan Engram, who ranks seventh among rookies totaled 282 receiving yards this season. Los Angeles Rams wideout Cooper Kupp is first at his position and 10th overall with 265 scrimmage yards.

Fournette leads the way with seven touchdowns this season, with Hunt trailing right behind with six. Despite not racking up a ton of yardage, Cleveland Browns rookie tight end David Njoku sits third on the list with three scores thus far, per Pro Football Reference.

None of the scoring accounts for passing touchdowns either. Houston Texans rookie signal-caller Deshaun Watson has thrown for a league-high 15 scores. Browns rookie Deshone Kizer and Chicago Bears rookie Mitchell Trubisky have added a couple passing scores as well.

Week 7 gets underway Thursday evening with Hunt and the Chiefs taking on the Oakland Raiders. While the Cook injury may slow the progress of scrimmage yards, it appears the 2017 rookie class could have one of the best inaugural campaigns in NFL history.

Lionel Messi’s 100th European Goal Puts 10-Man Barcelona by Olympiacos

Lionel Messi netted his 100th goal in European competition as 10-man Barcelona beat Olympiacos 3-1 in Group D of the UEFA Champions League at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Gerard Pique was sent off late in the first half for a second yellow card, and Barca went in 1-0 up at the break thanks to a Dimitris Nikolaou own goal in the 18th minute.

Messi settled any nerves that the visitors may launch a comeback with a neat free-kick just after the hour before setting up Lucas Digne for his first Champions League goal for Barcelona moments later.

Nikolaou headed a late consolation for the visitors, but the Catalans remain top of their group having won three from three in the 2017-18 tournament so far.

Both clubs provided their starting lineups ahead of kick-off:

Barca dominated from the off and could have been ahead in the fifth minute had Luis Suarez not surprisingly missed the target with a stretching effort at the far post after Samuel Umtiti’s headed flick-on from a corner.

It only seemed a matter of time before the hosts went ahead as Olympiacos were inviting pressure, and it was eventually one of the Greek side’s defenders who turned into his own net.

After holding out for the first 17 minutes, centre-back Nikolaou deflected home an own goal from Gerard Deulofeu‘s cross from the right.

The sparkling Deulofeu then forced a decent save from Silvio Proto in the 20th minute before Paulinho hit the bar moments later, and the Olympiacos goalkeeper then did excellently to keep out both Suarez and Messi before the break.

Pique did get the ball over the line three minutes from half-time. But instead of awarding a Barca goal, the referee correctly adjudged the Spanish centre-back had handled the ball into the goal and duly issued him a second yellow card.

Barca should have been home and dry by the break but were instead leading by just one goal and down to 10 men, and manager Ernesto Valverde then opted to replace Deulofeu with Javier Mascherano for the second half.

Just after the hour, Messi stepped up to ensure the three points as he curled home a fine free-kick, although Proto could arguably have done better to keep it out given he got a hand to it, per Spanish football writer Simon Harrison:

Per Opta, it was yet another milestone for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner:

In the 64th minute, the superlative Argentinian then created space on the right of the box and threaded a ball into Digne‘s path for the Frenchman to sweep home well with his left foot.

Barca looked to be heading for a clean sheet despite Pique’s dismissal. But with seconds remaining of normal time, Nikolaou rose brilliantly at a corner and looped a header past the outstretched hand of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs Game 3 Odds, Analysis, MLB Betting Pick

The Los Angeles Dodgers will attempt to remain unbeaten this postseason when they visit the Chicago Cubs in a near pick’em Game 3 of the NLCS at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. The Cubs are listed as small home favorites at the sportsbooks for the contest, and they have dropped four of seven in the playoffs at Wrigley Field dating back to last year’s NLCS against the Dodgers.

Betting line: The Cubs opened as -119 favorites (wager $119 to win $100) according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark. (Line updates and matchup report)

MLB betting pick, via OddsShark computer: 6.4-0.4, Dodgers (MLB picks on every game)

Why the Dodgers can pay on the MLB lines

Los Angeles is in prime position to make it back to the World Series now after improving to 5-0 in this year’s playoffs by taking the first two games of the NLCS at home. The Dodgers surrendered early leads to the Cubs in both games but were able to rally offensively in the later innings and count on their superior bullpen to shut the door on the defending World Series champions

Los Angeles will be sending Yu Darvish (10-12, 3.86 ERA) to the hill for Game 3, and he pitched great in his lone postseason start on the road versus the Arizona Diamondbacks, allowing one run and two hits in five innings.

Why the Cubs can pay on the MLB lines

Chicago has not lost three consecutive postseason games since getting swept by the New York Mets in the 2015 NLCS.

While Los Angeles may be on its way to doing the same thing, the Cubs have shown a unique ability to recover quickly and turn around a series after it looked like they were done. They rallied from a 3-1 deficit against the Cleveland Indians to win last year’s World Series after ousting the Dodgers in the NLCS with three straight wins after losing twice.

Smart betting pick

The big edge Chicago has in Game 3 is starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (7-5, 3.03), who has been brilliant when facing Los Angeles in the past. Hendricks gave up only two runs and eight hits combined in 20.2 innings over three starts versus the Dodgers last season, including two in the NLCS, walking five and striking out 17.

The Cubs are essentially facing a must-win situation in this spot, and there is no better pitcher for them than Hendricks. Bet on Chicago on the MLB lines to hand Los Angeles its first loss in this year’s playoffs.

MLB betting trends

Los Angeles is 4-1 in its last five games on the road.

Los Angeles is 5-0 in its last five games when playing Chicago.

Chicago is 9-2 in its last 11 games at home.

Ezekiel Elliott Will Play vs. 49ers in Week 7 After Suspension

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will play in Sunday’s Week 7 road game against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium after the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York granted a temporary restraining order against his six-game NFL suspension, according to sports legal expert Daniel Wallach

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and CBS Sports’ Will Brinson reported Elliott should be eligible to play for at least two weeks:

The NFL announced in August that Elliott would receive a six-game ban for a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy. The decision came following a year-long investigation into allegations of domestic violence made by Elliott’s former girlfriend Tiffany Thompson.

“[C]ommissioner [Roger Goodell] carefully considered the issues raised by the [NFL Players Association] on your behalf regarding witness credibility and alternative causation theories,” an NFL letter to Elliott read. “However, in the commissioner’s judgment, there has been no persuasive evidence presented on your behalf with respect to how Ms. Thompson’s obvious injuries were incurred other than conjecture based on the presence of some of her bruising, which pre-dates your arrival in Columbus on July 16, 2016.”

The 22-year-old Ohio State product released a statement about the decision on social media.

“I am both surprised and disappointed by the NFL’s decision today, and I strongly disagree with the league’s findings,” Elliott said. “I recognize the distraction and disruption that all of this has caused my family, teammates, the Dallas Cowboys organization as well as my fans—for that I am sincerely sorry.

“I admit that I am far from perfect, but I plan to continue to work very hard, on and off the field, to mature and earn the great opportunity that I have been given.”

In September, the 2016 NFL rushing champion was granted a temporary restraining order by Texas district court judge Amos Mazzant, who took aim at the league’s arbitration process.

“The NFL’s actions demonstrate that from the very beginning of the decision-making process, a cloud of fundamental unfairness followed Elliott,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, this cloud followed Elliott into the arbitration proceedings.”

His ruling allowed Elliott, who didn’t face criminal charges in the case, to play the Cowboys’ first five games of the regular season before their Week 6 bye.

Last week, however, a 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel in New Orleans ruled against the injunction that was allowing the Dallas running back to play. The decision cleared the way for the NFL to begin enforcing the suspension immediately.

The NFLPA filed for the new TRO in New York in an effort to once again halt the ban.

Looking ahead, the latest court ruling means Elliott is once again eligible to remain active while the legal process continues to play out. The league figures to follow a similar path to last time, appealing to get the order vacated, but a timetable for the next step is unclear.

Elliott, who’s rushed for 393 yards and two touchdowns across five games, should continue to receive a lion’s share of the work in the Cowboys backfield in the meantime.

Cliff Avril to Be Placed on IR with Neck Injury, Weighing Retirement

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll confirmed Wednesday the team will place defensive end Cliff Avril on injured reserve, according to SiriusXM NFL Radio.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted Avril is considering retirement.

Avril suffered a neck injury in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts. Rapoport reported he was dealing with “some numbness” down his arm after the injury.

Prior to this season, Avril had been a rock in Seattle’s defensive line with just one missed game from 2013 to 2016. His absence leaves a void in the Seahawks pass rush after he led the team with 11.5 sacks last year.

The good news for Seattle is its defensive line is one of its greatest strengths. Michael Bennett remains a disruptive force with four sacks. Sheldon Richardson doesn’t have a sack, but Nathan Jahnke of Pro Football Focus noted he had four quarterback pressures against the Colts.

Third-year defensive end Frank Clark has taken Avril’s spot in Seattle’s line rotation. Bennett, Richardson and Jarran Reed are also shouldering more responsibility.

Chandler Parsons Calls Grizzlies Fans Booing Him ‘Tasteless’

The 2017-18 NBA season is only on game old, but Memphis Grizzlies fans are already growing restless with Chandler Parsons.

Although the Grizzlies captured a 103-91 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night at FedExForum, Parsons heard boos from the crowd as he mustered six points on 2-of-2 shooting from the field and 1-of-5 shooting from the free-throw line.

As it turns out, those jeers didn’t sit well with the swingman.

“It’s tasteless,” Parsons said, according to the Commercial Appeal‘s Geoff Calkins. “I’ll treat home games like road games if that’s the way it’s going to be.”

Grizzlies center Marc Gasol was also turned off by the fans’ actions and said that booing Parsons “is like booing Mike [Conley] or booing myself,” per Calkins.

Now in his second season with the Grizzlies, the pressure is on Parsons to live up to a four-year, $94 million max deal that didn’t pay dividends during an injury-riddled 2016-17 campaign.

Following a productive two-year stint with the Dallas Mavericks, Parsons was limited to 34 games last season because of recurring knee issues, including a partial meniscus tear. As a result, he averaged a career-low 6.2 points per game on 33.8 percent shooting from the field and 26.9 percent shooting from three.

Parsons has since been shifted into a bench role, where he will try to operate as a microwave scorer and floor-spacing small-ball 4.

“Sometimes, contracts put a ton of pressure on you,” head coach David Fizdale said before the start of the season, according to the Commercial Appeal‘s Ronald Tillery. “Now, it’s about getting back to enjoying the game, and being able to play night in and night out.”

Donald Trump on NFL Standing for Anthem: ‘Too Much Talk, Not Enough Action’

President Donald Trump continued to lash out at the NFL and its owners Wednesday when he tweeted there has been “too much talk” and “not enough action” with regard to his belief that all players should be required to stand for the national anthem.

Trump’s tweet came hours after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed reporters following a meeting in New York with players and owners and reiterated he would like to see players stand for the anthem.

However, Goodell stopped short of making a mandate.

“We believe our players should stand for the national anthem,” he said, according to NFL Network’s Andrew Siciliano.

Goodell also clarified that players have made it clear to him they are not trying to disrespect the flag by protesting social injustice and racial inequality when the American flag is presented on the field.

Speaking Wednesday, Goodell said (via CNN Money’s Ahiza Garcia) players “will state to you, and they have stated to everyone publicly, they are not doing this in any way to be disrespectful to the flag. But they also understand how it’s being interpreted.”

Trump previously attacked NFL players who have protested during the anthem when he told supporters at a rally in Alabama he would like to see owners fire the “son of a bitch” who demonstrates.

Following those remarks and a conversation with Trump, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stated any of his players who protested in a disrespectful manner would be benched.

“If there’s anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play,” Jones said, according to Sports Illustrated‘s Michael Rosenberg. ”Understand? If we are disrespecting the flag, then we will not play.”

That statement drew praise from the president:

Players and owners also convened Tuesday, when the focus was reportedly on how players and teams could affect change in their communities.

“We did not ask for it,” Goodell said of anthem policy reform, per ESPN.com news services. “We spent today talking about the issues players are trying to bring attention to. Issues in our communities, to make our communities better.”

Real Madrid Transfer News: Keylor Navas on Kepa Arrizabalaga, Latest Rumours

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas has insisted he is not worried by reports linking the club with a move for Athletic Bilbao stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Navas has cemented his spot as the starting goalkeeper at the Santiago Bernabeu in recent years and has been an important component in the team’s success. However, Madrid continue to be linked with alternatives; Carlos Carpio of Marca wrote of their interest in Kepa a month ago.

Speaking after a brilliant performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League, Navas said he’s not bothered by the rumours.

“This is nothing new for me,” he said, per Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC. “Those who really love me, are with me always, are the ones who are important for me. I am many years here listening to the same thing. So I do not worry about it. As long as I am here I will fight for my place.”

Los Blancos drew with Spurs 1-1 on Tuesday, with Navas pulling off a brilliant save to keep out an effort from Harry Kane. Lucas Navarrete of Managing Madrid was full of praise for the Costa Rica international:

Of all the players in the Madrid squad, Navas is arguably the least illustrious name, and as a result, there will always be talk about potential replacements coming in.

According to Carpio’s report, Real will turn their attention from Manchester United star David De Gea to Kepa, who is one of the best young goalkeepers in Spanish football. The 23-year-old is said to have a €10 million (£9 million) release clause in his contract.

As noted by OptaJose, the Spain under-21 international was a key part of the Basque side’s solid start to the season:

There shouldn’t be any major urgency on the part of Madrid to replace Navas, though, as he continually made vital contributions to this side. The Costa Rican has been the last line of defence for Real in two Champions League wins and a La Liga success.

Fresh Gareth Bale Rumours

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward are in disagreement as to whether they should pursue Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale.

In the report, it’s suggested Mourinho isn’t keen on signing the Welshman, whereas Woodward believes a deal can be done.

It’s added that Madrid president Florentino Perez wants to move Bale on due to a succession of injury issues and reinvest the money received from his sale into other areas of the squad.

The forward has been a major hit since joining Los Blancos in 2013, winning the Champions League on three occasions. As noted by Corrigan, since Zinedine Zidane stepped in as manager, Bale has been one of the most prolific players in the squad:

Now 28, if a big offer for Bale did come in from a Premier League club, there would be a temptation to take it. In the final stages of last season, Madrid excelled without their injured No. 11, with Marco Asensio and Isco adding a different dynamic to the team.

Still, when he’s at full pelt, there aren’t many more devastating footballers in the world than Bale, as he’s blisteringly quick and technically outstanding. Madrid will remain hopeful he can put the recurrent fitness issues behind him and fire the team to more success this season.
